Is this where the (fictional) "Thursday Murder Club" members would go on holiday?

It is, as other have said a little gem. With excellent staff, the hotel has the air of days gone by, either holidays on a cruise liner or staying at the most charming hotel. Service is excellent, and the slightly unusual requirement to check the dinner menu four course offeringIt is, as other have said a little gem. With excellent staff, the hotel has the air of days gone by, either holidays on a cruise liner or staying at the most charming hotel. Service is excellent, and the slightly unusual requirement to check the dinner menu four course offering at breakfast soon became a habit. The food served for the 4 course meal each night was well presented and lovely quality. If you didn't one of the courses offered that evening (as there is no choice), you can ask at breakfast time for an alternative to be provided. Breakfasts were equally high calibre, with plenty of choice available. There are lots of antique furnishings, clean spacious rooms and lovely grounds. The views from the garden down to Funchal are beautiful, day or night, and an added bonus is being able to watch the many cruise ships coming and going. The weekday courtesy bus to/from Funchal was very good and reliable. Having walked down to Funchal once, we were not inclined to repeat that walk - and certainly the walk back uphill would be very tiring! The area around the hotel is residential, with a supermarket and a few small places to grab a beer or a coffee, but nothing else around is close to the standard offered at the hotel. This does limit the scope to go out for a walk from the hotel, such as an after dinner stroll. We enjoyed a very relaxing and well fed week at this hotel. It is very quiet, everything is kept very clean and offers a real feel for the quality of hospitality from days gone by, in a good way. If you are a fan of the Richard Osman"Thursday murder club" books, this would be a perfect holiday setting for their next adventure!

This was my third visit to this hotel since 2019. It is still the same friendly family run business. Staff welcome you back as an old friend. Many of them have worked here for several years. The three low level accommodation blocks are set in verdant well tended gardens. ThereThis was my third visit to this hotel since 2019. It is still the same friendly family run business. Staff welcome you back as an old friend. Many of them have worked here for several years. The three low level accommodation blocks are set in verdant well tended gardens. There are tennis courts, a small fitness centre and a pool with its own bar/ cafe. A couple of miles out of Funchal, the hotel overlooks the city and its port. The hotel offers a free minibus into Funchal town and local buses and tour buses pass nearby. Rooms are comfortable and well equiped with all the usual amenities. Housekeeping is efficient and friendly with a wecoming bottle of the islands wine and fruit cake delivered on the first evening. The restaurant is pleasant airy extension. Breakfast is a buffer with all the usual offerings though for English appetites, sausages are chorizo and streaky bacon really needs to be crisper. However there is an excellent continental selection, with many fruit and cereal options. Dinner is a set four course meal of a starter, a generous fish course, a maim meat course and finally a dessert with cheese as an alternative. Cooking is precise, uses fresh local ingredients and is well presented. There is a sound mainly local wine list. Given its location, this is not necessarily a hotel for families but for those who want a peaceful and comfortable base this hotel will be ideal.

A quaint well run 5 star hotel. The welcome and care of the staff was exemplary. The food was well prepared and served by a very attentive dining room staff. Fantastic hotel. Exceptional service with very friendly staff who are always ready to help. Delicious food with 3 choices of where to eat - all being excellent.
