Travelled with family (2 teens) in August. Room was spacious and second bedroom perfect for our two teen boys. Balcony view was incredible. Buffet restaurant was great, fresh and well presented and had plenty of choices. My favourite being the salad bar. Breakfast was excellent and the friendly chefs on the egg station made your eggs exactly how you want. We much preferred sitting outside but there was limited availability. The pool area is absolutely 5star. So quiet, amazing views out to sea and no problem finding four beds together at any time of day. We enjoyed Mama Mia - food was excellent and also Casa des Espandas - food okay but benches to eat on were not comfortable. Pool bar was great but closed very early. The only downside I would say is the bar is very corporate and lacks any atmosphere. The hotel needs another friendly bar - there are plenty of spaces to do this!! Some lovely bars a short walk away (steep hill) by the promenade de lido. We walked to Funchal Old town, cable cars a definite recommendation and also the natural pools (about 35 mins walk). I would really recommend this hotel. Thank you for a fantastic family holiday we have made some amazing memories x

Another fantastic family Holiday

This was our third year staying at the Vida Mar and another fantastic holiday.
The hotel goes above and beyond in making your holiday a relaxing one.
The three restaurants, that basically you only pay for drinks, are fantastic and along with the ability to switch dinner to lunch allows great flexibility

The three restaurants, that basically you only pay for drinks, are fantastic and along with the ability to switch dinner to lunch allows great flexibility and also change to the mail. Restaurant ( the buffet restaurant is also good )
One thing I would say is that the hotel and resort is becoming more family oriented, we traveled in school holidays. This is not a problem for us however other residents preferred the quieter hotel.
This hotel, in the Mediterranean, is a 4.5. / 5 star hotel. Clean , great food In a great location.
One note, their is construction going on the the right of the hotel. This did affect our holiday at all.

Not a 5* hotel!! Currently staying at Vidamar. Lack of atmosphere, feels like a conference hotel, very business like. Some staff really friendly some don't give you the time of day. On arrival at 9pm we were ushered to the restaurant to recieve the dregs of that evenings choices, we
Not a 5* hotel!! Currently staying at Vidamar. Lack of atmosphere, feels like a conference hotel, very business like. Some staff really friendly some don't give you the time of day. On arrival at 9pm we were ushered to the restaurant to recieve the dregs of that evenings choices, we ordered a drink that never arrived and gave up after asking twice. Even ordering a coffee after dinner was frowned upon. Additionally and this may seem irrelevant to some but we asked for a glass of ice, we chose to sit on our balcony and have a gin and tonic due to the total lack of atmosphere at any of the bars, we were told by reception we had to go to our room and ring room service to bring up the ice which would have cost us the 5 euro service charge!! Not against paying for services but we were there at reception asking for a couple of cubes of frozen water!! Very disappointing and not the service of a 5* hotel.
The pool, rooms and ocean view are amazing but don't make up for the lack lustre attitude of the staff and the dreadful lack of atmosphere.

The VidaMar is a very large hotel but there is plenty of room for everyone, including the swimming pool areas. We never had a problem finding a sun lounger no matter what time we arrived at the pools. The hotel is well kept and very clean. Bedrooms are large with great ocean views. The room was serviced every day to a good standard with towels replaced when requested.
Breakfast was of a very good standard with lots of choice. The evening meal was ok but not what we expected for a 5* hotel. The starter / salad bar had a good range of fresh salads but the main choice selection was limited and often the food was lukewarm at best. Desserts were good but the cheese was warm and sweaty.
The staff were really friendly and helpful and a credit to the hotel. Areas of the hotel, including the bedrooms, are looking a little tired and could do with some attention.
Overall, we thought this was a good hotel but would say more 4* than 5*.

We stayed here for a week in July, just got back today.
We found the hotel met our needs, the bedrooms were massive and the en-suite bathroom very good with a really powerful shower.
We did think the furniture was a little dated in the bedrooms and the shampoo/shower gel was cheapo.

We did think the furniture was a little dated in the bedrooms and the shampoo/shower gel was cheapo. The hotel also do not replace bottled water daily, just 2 tea bags and a coffee sachet which is definitely not how a 5 star hotel acts.
However, the furniture and decor in the main reception areas was modern and tidy.
The pools were lovely, they weren’t as cold as some of the reviews made out but they were a little chilly. The inside one was also not heated.
No problem getting a sun lounger or a table in a restaurant, the place was so big there was no having to reserve seats etc. plenty to go round.
One disappointing thing we found was there were hardly anywhere to get a beer. The poolside bar was good and the food there was excellent too but they were closed in the evening. You had the Lisboa cocktail bar at night but it was small and not a lounge around type of place, felt more formal in there although very nice.
We saw bars scattered around the hotel but they were not open one throughout the whole week which we thought strange
Overall though the location was good, walkable to many amenities and bus stops, the staff were all friendly, the hotel was clean, pools were beautiful, breakfast and dinner in the restaurants was all good and not too repetitive. We would say 3.5 - 4 star but not a 5 but very nice place all the same
