Hotel Details
The Quinta de São João is one of the oldest examples of typical Madeiran farms still standing. With a history closely linked to that of the island of Madeira itself, the farm has seen many experiences over the years, eventually becoming what it is today: – A small and charming five-star hotel with 42 rooms. The “Quintinha”, as we call it, maintains this essence full of history that you can almost relive as you walk through its gardens and all the interior corners of the hotel.

The staff and service were nice, but if you’re looking for a true 5 star accommodation this is not your place. The decor and furniture are dated, think your bird watching grandmas living room. There are much better options with a short-ish walk down the hill into town. Pro tip: pay €5 to cab it back from the city center. Shower is tight to say the least and the water will go from scalding hot to ice cold and back again without touching a thing. On the plus side: the water pressure is spectacular. The walls are a touch thin as our neighbors fell asleep with the TV on and we could hear it all night. Other than that the other guests were all very nice - just expect to see a lot of white hair, walking canes, and hearing aids. If the lobby had rocking chairs you could easily mistake this place for a retirement community. If you’re 55+ this is place for you! (My wife and I are mid-30s).

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 5 night stay at the Quintinha. We arrived over 4 hours late, due to problems with our flight, but Sara on reception was calm and professional and welcomed us warmly. We arrived over 4 hours late, due to problems with our flight, but Sara on reception was calm and professional and welcomed us warmly. In fact all of the staff that we met were lovely and a credit to the hotel. The food was excellent as was our room. The hotel is large enough to have all of the facilities that you need, but not so big so that it would feel impersonal. Can thoroughly recommend the couples massage at the Spa.

What a lovely hotel. Only 42 rooms so you will experience a level of service that you just dont get in much larger establishments. Only 42 rooms so you will experience a level of service that you just dont get in much larger establishments. Every single member of staff from reception to restaurant and housekeeping was super friendly and helpful. not once in the week we were there did any member of staff fail to acknowledge us, even in passing. As a traditional hotel i have to say the decor,pictures and furniture are all in keeping and absolutely lovely. Bedroom and bathroom were both large,well appointed and very comfortable. We had a great view towards the bay of Funchal. Indoor and outdoor pools, nice gardens, lovely bar/lounge area and restaurant all add to the enjoyment of staying here. We were on a B&B tariff, and there was plenty of choice both hot and cold. My only little criticism being the bacon and sausages. Catering for a fair percentage of Brits they could maybe find a better supplier. We only had one evening meal during our stay and i have to say it was excellent along with the service.
Location wise the hotel may not suit everyone. 15-20 minutes walk downhill to the nearest restaurants/shops. Taxis are cheap though so not a big issue.

This is an amazing hotel in every way! Our room was so spacious and clean with tea and coffee making facilities. Our room was so spacious and clean with tea and coffee making facilities. Throughout the hotel there is an atmosphere of peace and calm and, at night, there is no noise at all. The windows had blackout curtains and the bed was so comfortable so we slept really well. The breakfasts were the best we've ever had and we're available till 10.30 every morning. There were fresh fruits of all descriptions, even papaya and some unusual passion fruits, croissants, pastries, muffins, cheeses, ham, natural yogurt, nuts, dates, prunes, apricots and, on top of this, you could have a delicious cooked breakfast of eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomato etc. Last, but by no means least, the staff were amazing and friendly. Nothing was too much bother to them. In particular, we'd like to thank Ana and Maria for their excellent service on reception, Rosie for her help in recommending trips and places to eat and Marco and Bernardo for their friendly and helpful service in the restaurant. ALL the staff were great! We absolutely loved staying in this hotel and wouldn't hesitate to stay again if we return to Madeira. Thank you so much for making our first visit to Madeira so special.

A charming hotel very close to the centre of Funchal. Staff throughout were all amazing with a great welcome from Ana in the Hotel reception, friendly service from Marco at Breakfast and the occasional Dinner and super Cocktails served by Tony in the Bar. Staff throughout were all amazing with a great welcome from Ana in the Hotel reception, friendly service from Marco at Breakfast and the occasional Dinner and super Cocktails served by Tony in the Bar. Just 3 mentioned but many others met during the week’s stay that were friendly, professional and always willing to help. The Hotel communal areas are lovely to look at whenever wandering around or relaxing in and very well maintained too. The facilities we used were the 2 Pools, outside and inside Bar, Gym, Games Room, Main Garden Patio and Car Park for when we had a Hire Car (Free Parking).
The Room (Premium with Balcony) was as described and we were lucky to get the beautiful garden view too. Room was spacious, air conditioned (useful as Madeira Humidity was in the 60’s) and with very functional separate sitting room and balcony. Complimentary selection in the fridge on arrival and from then on, daily complimentary still and sparkling water. The En-suite was spacious too but some evidence of tiredness ie marks in Bath and sink area however just wear and tear.
Many reviews have mentioned the hill to negotiate when returning from Funchal so I will too. We are almost 60 and had no issues but it is a challenge especially in the high humidity so plan ahead and use the hotel’s courtesy bus when available, if not then it’s a walk or a taxi. Breakfasts were a wonderful start to each day with a well stocked buffet or selection of Chef produced dishes (Eggs various, Pancakes, Waffles etc).
