The Quinta de São João is one of the oldest examples of typical Madeiran farms still standing. With a history closely linked to that of the island of Madeira itself, the farm has seen many experiences over the years, eventually becoming what it is today: – A small and charming five-star hotel with 42 rooms. The “Quintinha”, as we call it, maintains this essence full of history that you can almost relive as you walk through its gardens and all the interior corners of the hotel.

My wife and I have just returned from the amazing Quintinha Sao Joao for the 6 th time and are already very much looking forward to returning in January 2025, and other dates next year. We feel that everything about this hotel is faultless. From the excellent food and service provided by Felipe (who is such a gentleman) and all his staff, the bar staff, the reception staff who are very pleasant and welcoming and not forgetting the wonderful Rosie in Guest Services who is always so cheery and helpful. She goes out of her way to ensure that you have all the information you require for Madeira, printing off bus routes etc. And advising things to do during your stay. She will book trips for you and nothing is ever too much trouble for her.
The bedrooms and all areas of the hotel are kept spotlessly clean by the cleaning staff. The food is the best we have ever had the pleasure to taste. From the massive variety available at breakfast to the wonderful meals at night. The chefs do an amazing job and are great at catering for my wife’s gluten intolerance, without detracting form taste or quality of the meals. The restaurant and indeed the whole hotel is beautifully decorated and the ambience is so relaxing.
My wife had 2 massages from Daniella and she found these to be so relaxing. The hotel gardens re kept beautiful, with lots of unusual plants and beautiful orchids.
It is so relaxing sitting out in the garden bar and having a drink or something to eat.
Several of the staff have worked at the hotel since it opened - 26 years ago, which shows you how well they are treated by the General Manager, Andre Barreto who is so pleasant.
We re really looking forward to returning next Month.

Quintinha Sao Jaoe was fabulous. Spacious, well equipped room. Excellent friendly staff and homely feel to hotel. Had half board and food was fabulous and plentiful. QSJ made us feel cherished and we can hardly wait to repeat that feeling!!

On our ninth visit to QSJ, the welcome we received from Catarina and her Reception colleagues was like a nice warm bath on a cold day. We were happy to see that the hotel is living up to its own high standards in every way: most importantly, theOn our ninth visit to QSJ, the welcome we received from Catarina and her Reception colleagues was like a nice warm bath on a cold day. We were happy to see that the hotel is living up to its own high standards in every way: most importantly, the staff team are unfailingly efficient and lovely, the beds comfortable, the food and drink excellent and not forgetting the beautiful flower arrangements in the public areas created lovingly by the General Manager's mother. It's true that the hotel is a little way out of central Funchal and the hill up to it can be a challenge, but QSJ has a courtesy minivan on weekdays that does the trip down to town at 10am and 2.30pm, and back to the hotel at 12 noon and 5pm. If this doesn't suit, a local taxi makes the journey very swiftly and cheaply. For ideas about what to see and do in Madeira, look no further than Customs Relations Manager Rosie - if she can't recommend a particular place or attraction from her vast store of local knowledge, then it isn't worth visiting. As usual, we found nothing and nobody we did not like at QSJ and have already booked our next holiday there.

Our fourth stay in Madeira but our first at this lovely hotel - and it hopefully won’t be the last!

We loved everything about the place - the position away from the hustle and bustle, the size, our room, the gardens, the pools, the spa, the breakfast, the restaurant, the bar, the relaxed chilled atmosphere, and most of all, the people. Everybody was lovely and nothing was too much trouble.
This hotel is family owned and run and it was evident that everyone was happy to be there and determined to ensure we enjoyed our stay. In the words of Arnold Swartzenegger - ‘we will be back!’

My husband and I returned yesterday after a lovely week at this fabulous hotel.
It’s in a residential area approx 15 minute walk mostly down hill into the centre of Funchal. Obviously, the return walk is up mostly uphill but there are loads of taxis in town, €5-7 Euros approx.

It’s in a residential area approx 15 minute walk mostly down hill into the centre of Funchal. Obviously, the return walk is up mostly uphill but there are loads of taxis in town, €5-7 Euros approx.
There is a free shuttle bus Mon-Fr but it only runs a couple of times a day.
This spotless hotel is tranquil, has lovely gardens, 2 pools ( one ‘rooftop’, one outdoor) and a spar.
There was a little road noise, but that can’t be helped due to its location.
We had a beautiful standard double room with balcony overlooking the garden.
We stayed b&b , the breakfast was fresh, varied and plentiful with freshly cooked hot food choices if wanted . We had a la carte on 2 nights- really nice.
Light snacks are served during the day on a lovely patio area.
There was a singer and a pianist a couple of nights, lovely when sitting relaxing with a drink.
All the staff are exceptional, very helpful, polite and always have a cheery greeting for you .
Rosie was great , booking tours and giving you information on buses, attractions etc.
Our first time on the beautiful island of Maderia but we will certainly be back and to the Quintinha Sao João, we were very sad when our week was over.
