Not only did the hotel provide exceptional staff and amenities, the entertainment was beautiful. We were whisked away with the beauty. We stayed on the 6th floor, elevators were quick, the breathtaking scenery was so on point. If you look down close at night to the trees directly near you, the Oriental pied Hornbills would sit in the trees. Magnificent birds, very similar to a toucan. The neighboring forest is meters away and a night walk is well worth it through the discovery centre. We met the executive chef that has Michelin stars after a fantastic 8 course meal that we thought was four courses. Hot pot was too much for two but we so thoroughly enjoyed this also. Tepi Laut restaurant has a large range of food, however we couldn’t go past Framaggi pizza, wow. So from horse riding, surfing, pool and pool games, bike riding, cooking classes that you don’t need to book, entertainment all round, this is the best place to go in Kota Kinabalu. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Shuttle bus will take you to golf course or into town and other places. Very quick.

A Wonderful vacation in Kota Kinabalu!

From the moment we arrived at Shangri-La Rasa, we were warmly welcomed. We loved our room; it was spacious, and the ocean view from our balcony was both stunning and serene. We stayed for just over two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed everything the hotel had to offer.
The location is incrediblyFrom the moment we arrived at Shangri-La Rasa, we were warmly welcomed. We loved our room; it was spacious, and the ocean view from our balcony was both stunning and serene. We stayed for just over two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed everything the hotel had to offer.
The location is incredibly picturesque and teeming with wonderful wildlife. I particularly enjoyed the sounds of various birds and butterflies that roamed the grounds. The hotel is well-maintained and spotless. The staff does their very best for their guests, working diligently with a smile. Shangri-La should be proud of their team—from the front desk to housekeeping, the chefs, waitstaff, and gardeners.
It was delightful to be greeted by everyone in the lobby and poolside. They knew us by name, which made us feel very much at home. The pools are excellent, clean, and always supervised by lifeguards. I noticed that children also enjoyed their time around the hotel and pool, highlighting how child-friendly the resort is.
We appreciated the distinct atmospheres offered by the two wings of the hotel: the more peaceful Ocean Wing and the Garden Wing, which provided a livelier environment for those who prefer a bit more activity.
There were always daily activities to keep both kids and adults entertained. I truly enjoyed the morning hike through the rainforest reserve and loved the views of the ocean and river from the top. Additionally, I learned a few cooking skills from the daily cooking demonstrations.
We will cherish this holiday and, now refreshed from the ocean breeze and the sun, we both are ready to face the cold winter in the UK.
We would like to thank the management and its employees for making our holiday a memorable time.

A wonderful stay

The staff at this resort were really lovely. Everyone we encountered from the moment we arrived till our farewell wave was very nice. It really made us feel that they were paying attention and keen to make sure that we were ok. We were staying in the oceanside and everyoneThe staff at this resort were really lovely. Everyone we encountered from the moment we arrived till our farewell wave was very nice. It really made us feel that they were paying attention and keen to make sure that we were ok. We were staying in the oceanside and everyone we walked through the lobby staff would call out a greeting or give us a wave. We took the shuttle bus over to the spa which was very easy and quick to do but we were quite happy to just walk to anywhere else we wanted to go on site. Our junior suite sea view room was clean, light and spacious with a lovely view. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage space.
We chose this resort in particular because of the Rasa Ria nature reserve. We really enjoyed our time with the resident naturalists during a night walk and the morning avian exploration. They shared lots of interesting information and answered all our questions. We had a great time with them which was a great counterpoint to other activities on the resort.
We were a bit disappointed that Tepi Laut was being renovated during our visit but the daily changing buffet theme in the coffee terrace gave us the opportunity to try the dishes. A big positive of staying in the ocean wing is being able to have breakfast in the oceano modern grill which was a great way to start the day. A tasty variety of choices plus friendly staff.
I also did the batik canting. Once again the staff hosting were lovely and they were particularly patient with me - arts & crafts are not my strong point. The item I made had to be taken away to the Landry for the magic to happen and I was impressed when it was brought to me whilst finishing off breakfast. The only thing I would comment on that activity was that I was brought a lunch platter. I am not sure that this was made clear in the booking information and had I been aware I would not have eaten before the activity. I felt a bit guilty not making a real dent in it)
We also did an afternoon river excursion booked through the hotel. As we visited during an off peak time, it ended up just being us on the excursion. A really interesting and chatty guide and we were pleased to have gone out from the resort to see life on the river.
The pool areas are attractive and a good size. Lifeguards were also on duty at both pools and the beach. They were all paying attention.
We had a really nice stay here and we left feeling really relaxed and happy.

Stunning location with the most beautiful beach and pool. The staff were all so friendly and keen to help out. Some lovely fish to snorkel with despite the coral not being in good condition. The A/C and TV , lights were left running in our separate living room area which had we realised sooner would have turned off sooner to save electricity and we heard this was happening in others chalets.
We loved all the wildlife around the resort including so many hornbills and water monitor lizards. The food was delicious particularly a pizza we had for lunch. Beautiful flowers also around the resort.

An intimate paradise retreat

We arrived at this paradise island after visiting Sepilok and Kanabatangan river. Two of us were sick and we needed a refuge. The resort welcomed us with open arms and we had the most incredible stay.

The resort is surrounded by stunning mangrove forests on a beautiful bay. It’s intimate and serene with villas on the beach and up into the hillside. We stayed in a spacious two bedroom villa high in the trees with a view of the beach and sea beyond. A family of Macaque monkeys with a small baby regularly visited us along with a pair of hornbills. It was like living in our own private wildlife retreat.
The service was exceptional and we loved our meals, especially in the Longhouse serving Asian food. There is an international restaurant by the beach but the ambience is not as good. Every meal we had was perfection and the menus were extensive. We particularly loved the fresh juices and mocktails and they make a great margarita. Reynaldo and Ellyika were particularly warm and welcoming in the restaurant always anticipating our needs and remembering what we like.
The spa was also fabulous - real expertise and stunning surroundings.
There are mosquitos and sand flies but this is a paradise island in the jungle and so you have to expect it. Bring mosquito spray!
We have stayed in many resorts around the world and this is in the top 3. It’s not as slick and polished as some 5 star resorts but this adds to its charm. It’s like a rustic village in the rainforest with every comfort and luxury you need with very personal service. We loved every minute and highly recommend.

Small changes would make such a difference

Lovely setting in a beautiful bay. Villa’s generally good but very hilly if you are not keen on walking (although there is a buggy service). Food generally good. All of the staff very friendly.

The thing that lets the hotel down is poor management and leadership - there is no sign of any senior management or staff. For example there is no one taking drinks orders at the pool or clearing plates/cups, there is no receptionist at the Spa, you are given a bizarre breakfast when you leave at 6 am in the morning (hot coffee as you get on a speedboat), they ran out of certain types of drinks at least 3 times and the service is a little slow. Some better training and guidance would make all the difference and would convert the hotel from having Fawtly Towers tendences to a good 4.5 resort!

This resort has the most fabulous location and huge wow factor. We stayed for 3 nights in a Superior Villa high up in the rainforest but if you had mobility issues you should consider staying elsewhere. We stayed for 3 nights in a Superior Villa high up in the rainforest but if you had mobility issues you should consider staying elsewhere. A club car was offered to collect guests, but it took too long and the road was very steep – almost too steep for walking. Breakfast options were limited and became boring – even after 3 days! The 5 -star resort category across Borneo is highly competitive and if the Bunga Raya wants to stay in this market then some serious maintenance needs to take place and some serious retraining of staff needs to occur. At times the whole place felt like a cross between Fawlty Towers and a run-down granny flat.

Way beyond expectations - incredible end to our Borneo trip

Having booked this holiday pre Covid and only just completed the trip , we dipped into trip advisor again a week ago and panicked having read a few reviews from march to early June - cleanliness, hills and flies!

I truly believe that was early season and Bungaraya was not operating at full capacity of staff.
We are here now day 3 of 5 ( late June) and it has been exceptional , beach is clean of debris , resort is under constant maintenance - sweeping , cleaning etc .
The room (room50) is the highest on resort and offers spectacular views of the rainforest with the sea glimmering through branches .
Yes we are high up , but a buggy arrives within seconds to collect us .. really not a problem whatsoever.
Staff - all of them cannot do enough for you .. truly exceptional .
Food - tasty with superb presentation, fresh produce .. not one upset over any meal .
Sand flies - didn’t experience any whilst walking on the beach.
Snorkelling was fascinating and all equipment FOC .
Do not be put off by early season reviews … luxury in the rainforest !
